World Press Photo 2008
Selected by an international jury of experts from the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam who have been awarding this prestigious prize for 50 years, this exhibition brings together the best and most representative images chosen from those that have accompanied, documented and illustrated international newspaper stories on world events during the course of an entire year.
The 2007 Photo of the Year was taken by British photographer Tim Hetherington in Afghanistan and portrays an exhausted American soldier resting in a bunker. This year, four Italian photographers were the recipients of significant awards: Massimo Siragusa was runner up in the Arts and Entertainment: Stories category for his reportage on free-time, shown at the previous edition of the Festival too, which takes a warm-hearted look at the whole of Italy, from the Trentino in the north, right down to Sicily in the south. Stefano De Luigi was runner up in the same category but in the singles section, for the series of photographs, done in collaboration with Contrasto, taken for his “Cinema Mundi” project, a passionate and visionary description of the thriving, but little known cinematic world in places as far apart as Shanghai, Moscow and Tehran – a world only now gaining recognition. Simona Ghizzoni won third prize in the Portraits: Singles category for her work entitled “The house of the children who don’t eat” that focuses on children with eating disorders and their long and difficult journey back to health, whilst Francesco Zizola (Noor) won second prize in the “People: Stories” category for his reportage for “Internazionale” showing different aspects of the violence in Colombia.
