Illustrazioni per libri inesistenti. Artisti con Manganelli
60 works including painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, books and documents, from important private collections but also from the Fondazioni of the artists involved and from the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.
The exhibition is dedicated to the partnership that aims to trace the life of Giorgio Manganelli (1922-1990), one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, with eleven artists of his time (Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti, Carol Rama, Toti Scialoja, Gastone Novelli, Achille Perilli, Franco Nonnis, Gianfranco Baruchello, Giovanna Sandri, Giosetta Fioroni and Luigi Serafini)
Also exhibited for the first time in its entirety is the cycle of twenty-three panels created by Gastone Novelli in 1964 at the time of Manganelli's first work, Hilarotragoedia.
Two very different periods are thus brought into focus: the 1960s of the Roma 'fiammeggiante' of the Nuove Avanguardie and the 1980s of the Milano of the new and glittering "sistema dell'arte". Connecting Manganelli with the art of his time was his friend Lea Vergine who, by introducing him to Carol Rama, introduced him to the 'altra metà dell'avanguardia'.
The exhibition, curated by Andrea Cortellessa, is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali with the support of the Comitato nazionale per le celebrazioni del centenario della nascita di Giorgio Manganelli. Organised by Zètema Progetto Cultura. Catalogue published by Electa.
